ASSESSMENT
Assessment is the process of judging in terms of criteria. Criteria are expected outcomes and observable evidence of learning. Each project and homework assignment has a posted rubric that clearly defines the criteria used in determining a specific grade.
Each final project will be graded with an accompanying critique/ evaluation sheet using specific criteria and objectives. Written work, oral presentations, and class participation provide opportunities for student's to demonstrate their knowledge and application of what they have learned. Related rubrics are posted under the Grading page.

Applying Knowledge- 50% Most major projects are broken down into short-term objectives that demonstrate application of basic technique(s) and concepts. The assessment of the objectives provide opportunity for feedback and correction prior to completing the project. Students are able to make improvements and to increase their grade at times.
An example of a short term objective is making a vase form using two handbuilding methods, pinch pot and coils. Assessment of the bowl form and coil characteristics determine a component grade prior to the final grade of a completed project. The final grade scales experimentation, creativity and inclusion of criteria and objectives.
Projects that explode in the kiln due to an incorrect technique(s) will receive a grade of 70.
Students always have the option to redo the project and a new grade will be given determined by the most recent assessment.
Class Participation - 30% During class a student's effort and attitude during their are scaled. are categories performance are assessed and determine the grade.
